Working Holiday (subclass 417) and Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visas are intended for people between the ages of 18 and 30 (inclusive) to visit Australia for tourism and cultural purposes and to undertake incidental work to fund their stay in the country.

Both visa programs allow the visa holders to stay in Australia for a period of 12 months. Generally, individuals are only eligible for one Working Holiday or Work and Holiday visa in their lifetime, but individuals who undertake certain types of work in regional Australia as well as Iranian citizens can apply for a second Working Holiday or Work and Holiday visa respectively.

Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa holders can now access the second 12 month visa if they work in Northern Australia for at least 3 months in agriculture or tourism and hospitality industries. Northern Australia is defined as all of the Northern Territory and areas of Western Australia and Queensland north of the Tropic of Capricorn. 

Key points:

  • The applicant holds a valid passport from a country participating in the program.

  • The applicant is over 18 years old and makes an application before his or her 31st birthday.

  • No dependent children will accompany the applicant to Australia at any time during his or her stay

  • The applicant meets the genuine visitor, health and character criteria and has sufficient funds and has a reasonable prospect of obtaining employment in Australia.

  • The initial visa application for both Working Holiday or Work and Holiday visa programs must be lodged when the applicant is outside Australia.

  • Both subclass 417 and 462 visas are subject to a work limitation, condition 8547, which restricts employment to a 6 month period for any one employer during the validity of the visa.

  • Working Holiday makers may be eligible to apply for another visa while they are in Australia, unless a “no further stay condition” has been attached to their visa.
